A Ball is Jeff Barnhart and Brian Holland's second excursion into
the ragtime age, with a new spirit and enthusiasm for the entire
period. We are given both old and new rags, blues, ragtime
songs, bits of what Jelly Roll called "Spanish Tinge,"
stride boogie and the Kitchen Sink. We have here an approach to
ragtime that is largely improvisational. As jazz built on a
ragtime foundation, that spirit of improvisation and syncopated fun is
evident in both the "classic rags," and in the ragtime songs
which are infused with a jazz inflection.
